Love, Care & Achievement

Behala Anwesha – The Quest was set up in 2004 as a place for helping children with special needs. We are a non profit, self funded, non governmental organisation (NGO) set up by parents of children with special needs and disabilities. We aim to provide both support and opportunity for people with different abilities to develop and flourish.

Press Release: Behala Anwesha – The Quest receives USD 5000 grant from MDRT USA

We are proud to announce that our student Aparna Roy received the National Award from the Honourable President of India Smt. Murmu on the 3rd of December 2022.

Update from January 2023: We are working to restart in person classes and sessions. Further updates will be shared soon.
Covid19 update from 2020: The lock down has really created havoc with all our activites and plans for the year. The Government of India has closed all institutions like ours with in-person sessions, until December 2020. However we are trying to keep the spirits of the children up by celebrating as many functions as possible. We are running classes and sessions digitally. Of course only those who have a place to dance at home and android phones can participate. We keep posting what our students create or perform via our Facebook and WhatsApp channels. Please visit our Events and Activities page for some videos and the Photos page to see more.

Our Vision: We dream of building a place where special children are an integral part of the society. We want to create awareness that people with mental and physical disability are capable of being happy, useful members of the society.

Our Mission: We want to empower children with special needs so that they can lead a life of dignity, hone their skills and boost their self-esteem. We want parents to be proud of their specially abled children and help them to be self reliant.

Our Goal: To reach out to more and more such parents with differently abled children so that they no longer feel such children are a burden. We want to give hope that their children can be happy and turn their disability into an ability through skilled training, love, patience and proper guidance.

How we started: Our founder, Mrs. Sharmila Basu’s son has Down’s syndrome. Instead of letting it become a source of suffering for her, she took it as a challenge to see how with proper guidance and training a special child could not only be a part of mainstream society but also achieve accolades and success. At first, the NGO operated in Behala, but as more and more parents volunteered and joined in the work, it was decided in November 2009, to move to a more central location in Lake Market, Kolkata. This made the travelling easier for children who come from various parts of Kolkata and its suburban areas.
